Vision Correction Procedures

Refractive issues such as astigmatism, or being nearsighted or farsighted means relying on corrective lenses to go about your day. Our surgeons can reshape corneas and correct refractive errors with refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK or PRK to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Our team can also correct cataracts to restore clear, sharp vision. The team of eye care professionals at Cohen Eye Associates, Limited, can determine if you are a good candidate for refractive surgery or another type of vision correction procedure during an eye exam at our St. Louis, MO, office.

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery uses a number of state-of-the-art technologies to shape the patient's cornea and correct issues such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. Using wavefront and corneal topography to detect minute irregularities on the surface of the cornea allows our LASIK surgeon greater control during the procedure. Results are incredibly quick, and most people can go to work the day after LASIK eye surgery. LASIK surgery can provide you with clearer vision so that you can live your life without having to worry about glasses or contacts.

PRK Refractive Eye Surgery

While LASIK surgery is an incredible treatment option, it is not right for everyone. For example, patients with thin corneas will likely not qualify for LASIK surgery. For the right candidates, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) can provide an alternative procedure to LASIK. LASIK creates a flap to access and reshape the corneal tissue. Some corneas are too thin to fully correct vision with LASIK. Because of this important difference, the recovery time for PRK is considerably longer than LASIK. Side effects are similar to LASIK, with dry eye being the most common.

Cataract Surgery

Our surgeons can provide a range of treatment options for those suffering from the cloudy vision caused by cataracts. By replacing a clouded crystalline lens with an intraocular lens (IOL), we can provide clear and sharp vision so that you can resume all the tasks and activities that poor eyesight has kept you from doing. Our advanced, premium lenses can reduce or even eliminate your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. We perform small incision cataract surgery for patients interested in the least invasive method of treating cataracts with fewer potential side effects.

Glaucoma Treatment

To prevent vision loss due to glaucoma, early detection and treatment are key. The earlier glaucoma is detected, the more effective conservative treatments such as eye drops and oral medications can be in controlling the pressure of fluid in the eye. More moderate cases can benefit from the use of a laser to improve a drainage route. For extreme cases, surgery can alleviate severe drainage issues by placing an implant or manually creating a new path. Depending on your needs, the friendly team at Cohen Eye Associates, Limited, can provide you with a solution.

Dr Nancy Buscher is the best!! I have taken my daughter to three Ophthalmologists since she was very young and we had to recently make a switch. Dr Nancy was awesome. Not only is she smart and observant and was able to solve some long term unresolved issues that my daughter had, but she is very nice and professional, as well.

I thank her for helping my daughter. Recommend!

I had poor vision that could not be corrected due to cataracts. Dr. Cohen gave me back 20/20 vision! I had been wearing mono vision contacts for many years so I was a good candidate for mono vision surgery. Compounding my problem was the bad astigmatism in both eyes. He put in a lens that corrected my astigmatism in one eye and was able to correct the other eye with an additional surgical procedure. I would certainly recommend his practice for those needing cataract surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LASIK painful?

While a limited number of patients may experience a sensation of pressure during the procedure, our LASIK surgeon will provide anesthetic drops to numb your eyes before treatment. That being said, most patients experience zero pain when undergoing laser surgery.

How safe is LASIK?

Our LASIK surgeon, Dr. Cohen, has safely improved patients' vision with LASIK surgery for over 20 years. There are possible complications that can occur from any surgery, but we use the latest advanced lasers and technology in order to minimize risks and improve patient safety.

How long does LASIK last?

LASIK is a permanent vision correction procedure with long-lasting results. That being said, as we age the lens behind the cornea loses its ability to focus on nearby objects. LASIK surgery can not prevent the natural aging process, so reading glasses may be needed for patients after the age of 40.

How long is the recovery time following LASIK?

The majority of patients will experience improved clarity of vision immediately following surgery. However, there is a recovery period of eight to twelve weeks following the procedure. Our LASIK surgeon will advise you on the recovery process and what to expect in the days and weeks following your surgery.
